Manipulations (2017)

Ik heb een grote caleidoscoop gebouwd van ongeveer een meter lang, eentje waarbij je niet alleen kunt variëren met de inhoud van de draaibare kralendoos, maar ook de buis met spiegels zelf kunt gebruiken. Op deze manier kun je spelen met perspectief, camerastand e.d. 

Met deze caleidoscoop kan ik fantastische mogelijkheden laten zien. Met behulp van spiegels speel ik in dit project 'Manipulations' met fantasie alsof het een wetenschappelijk experiment is, ook met gebruik van fietslampjes. Als in een organisch proces kun je de verschillende onderdelen analyseren en concreet afbakenen, maar de som der delen kan steeds verrassen. Er ontstaan allerlei verschillende patronen, er is regelmaat en orde, maar er is niet echt sprake van controle.

Als je grip probeert te krijgen op de wereld om je heen, lijkt de wetenschap een ideaal uitgangspunt. Gedetailleerd onderzoek en experiment suggereren de waarheid. Maar dat kan ook een schijnwaarheid zijn. Door onderwerp, methode en/of gereedschap te 'lenen' van de wetenschap, maar tegelijkertijd te spelen met de inhoud, probeer ik de nadruk te leggen op de onmogelijkheid om grip te krijgen.

I have built a large kaleidoscope, about one meter length, one in which you can vary not only the contents of the rotating head with beads, but you can also use the tube with the mirrors itself. In this way you can play with perspective, camera angle etc. 

With this kaleidoscope  I can show fantastic possibilities.  In 'Manipulations' I play with this kaleidoscope as if it were some sort of scientific experiment , also using little bicycle lamps. Just like in an organic process one can analyse the separate parts of content and fence them in, but the sum of its parts can surprise every time. All kinds of patterns appear, there is regularity and order, but there is no control. 

If you try to get a grip on the world around you, science seems like an ideal starting point. Detailed research and experiment suggest the truth. But that can also be a fake truth.

By 'borrowing' subject, method and/or tools from science, while at the same time playing with the content, I try to point out the impossibility to get a grip.
